About

Stefon Osae is an Arizona-born, Austin-based multi hyphenated DJ, producer and songwriter.

Austin, Texas, despite claiming stake as the live music capital of the world, still struggles to find its breakout star in hip-hop, unlike that of Houston. The Longhorns and SXSW are both synonymous with the city, but that doesn’t extend too far into the rap scene. Stefon Osae, an Arizona-born, Austin-based multi hyphenated DJ, producer and songwriter, has a precarious uphill hike to capture critical attention beyond the city limits.

Inspired by producers like The Neptunes, J. Dilla, Madlib, Questlove, and Kanye West it’s safe to assume beat-making is Stefon’s first language. Overly Saturated doesn’t land on any signature sound grown from the Texas/southern region besides its leisurely nature. The production rather humanizes Osae’s imagination. His guest features function as another musical element within his world. His beats provide structural support for each artist - Zayland, Jay Wile, and Chase - creating an impressive soundscape for these local newcomers to shine and flex their vocal and lyrical capabilities on songs as original as the lead single “Roll The Dice” and “Whats Good.” Osae is also captivating unaccompanied on this 7-track beat tape. “Peaches,” and “Rosa” highlight his strengths and personality as a producer, with the latter having enough coolness to be a bop-friendly track perfect for any DJ set (even his own) or as a palate cleanser on a self-curated playlist.

Overly Saturated frames its identity away from familiar, nostalgic sampled-remixes heard by other producers. Instead, with much to prove but not preoccupied with the massive influx of music, this minimal EP has a human groove to it best enjoyed at a local underground venue found in Brooklyn. Regardless of how this project could be categorized, it’s a neurophysiological reboot laying out the perfect mechanics of how a DJ-producer uses his beats to communicate to a listener.
